Google’s Privacy Policy Shift

You may have noticed over the last couple of days email correspondence from Google letting you know of their pending changes to their Privacy Policy across there multiple platforms.  Well, what does it all mean?

OK, remember 2 weeks ago we advised that Google Search had changed and that search in the future at least on Google, would be influenced considerably by information that you may have stored in a Google product, or a product that allows others who you are connected to, particularly Google + to see that information?

As clear as mud?

Let me try and demystify this for you.  If you are searching in Google, and you have a Google Account that is activated at the time of your searches, then Google based upon your previous searches, and the influence of other Google Products you may have, like Google +, Picasa or YouTube will turn up search results that are personalized specifically to you.

So, if I’m searching for a family law in Sydney, the search results may be influenced by the results I’ve previously seen for this search term, and similar search results that were liked by people in my Google + network.

In other words, when your Google account is active at the time of search, your search results for the same term may be different to mine.

Now, the privacy policy shift at Google applies one policy across their plethora of products.  In a practical sense what this means for you and your firm, notwithstanding that search is now different and all that energy you’ve expired to rank 1 may become less important, is that search is becoming much more personalised.

You can bet, after 1 March when the policy changes, that Google will be serving up to you, based upon the vast array of information that they are collecting on you across platforms, suggested additional Google products and ads of course, that are targetted to you.

This of course is where the sweet spot may be for your firm.  If Google can offer you extraordinarly defined sets of demographics, then offering your services to people based upon Google’s information may be right on target.

Hope this has helped.  If we can help prepare your firm, give us a call on 1300 886 322 or if your in the US or Canada, we’ll be in your neck of the woods in April.  Drop us a line right here.

Here’s a video that cuts it pretty well.
